Stainless Steel

Definition of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is making from a low carbon steel which contains chromium, nickel, which this addition of chromium that gives the steel its unique corrosion resisting properties. There are more than 60 grades of stainless steel. However, the entire group can be divided into several classes.

The Advantage of Stainless Steel

  • High corrosion resistance
Stainless steels have a high resistance to corrosion. Low grades resist corrosion in atmospheric conditions; high grades can resist corrosion in most acids, alkaline solutions, and chloride bearing environments, even at elevated temperatures and pressures.
  • High temperature resistance
Stainless Steel will resist scaling and maintain high strength at high temperatures.
  • Fabrication easily
The Stainless steels can be fabricated like cutting, weldeing, forming, machining.
  • Strength
The stainless steels can be used in structural design. Stainless steels may be heat treated and hardened to make very high strength components.
  • Aesthetic appearance
Stainless steel is available in many surface finishes. It is easily and simply maintained resulting in a high quality appearances depend on its application.
  • Hygienic and Food Grade properties
The some type of stainless steel makes it is possible for application in hospitals, kitchens, food and pharmaceutical processing facilities.

Type of Stainless Steel
There are three main types of Stainless Steel, Martensitic, Ferritic & Austenitic.

  • Martensitic
The Martensitic Stainless steels are magnetic, containing typically 12% chromium and a moderate carbon content. These types of Stainless steel liked plain carbon steel.
  • Ferritic
Ferritic Stainless steels are still magnetic, but have low carbon content and contain chromium as the main element, typically at the 13% and 17% levels.
  • Austenitic
The Austenitic Stainless steels are not magnetic, containing chromium, typically at 18%, also containing Nickel, which increases their corrosion resistance, and are the common widely used group of Stainless Steels.

 Grade of Stainless Steel

  • Standardizations
Stainless Steel follow some standard like JIS, ASTM, or AISI. Each standard with respective designation grade has specific range of properties and surface finish. JIS 4304, JIS 4305, ASTM A480, ASTM A240, AISI A167, AISI A176 are popular standard grade designation example.
  • Properties
Stainless Steel properties divided into Chemical Composition Properties and Mechanical Physical Properties. Each Grade has range and limitation value of properties according to the grade designation type
  • Surface Finish
Depend on its application, some surface finish quality of stainless steel are available.
    • Finish 2B
Non Polished products, it attains a brighter and flatter finish. It is the standard surface with improved mechanical properties.
    • Finish 3
Polished product, an attractive glossy finish
    • Finish 4
Polished product. It has an attractive silvery-white surface, which is finer than Finish 3.
    • Finish HL
It is a product with continuous striped pattern acquired by polishing.
    • Finish BA
After cold rolling, the coil is annealed in a protective gas that prevents oxidization of the surface and skinpassed. BA product is highly reflective. Also it is used for home appliances, small-sized mirror, kitchenware, building materials and others that require highly reflective properties.
